Over the past two decades, students at Chabad yeshivas worldwide, as well as other religious students studying the Gemara, have seen a wide array of new improvements in the printing of Gemaras and proliferation of the commentaries written over the past centuries.
However, Chabad students were dismayed when they noticed that, with each new printing, the works of the Chabad Rebbe's have by and large, gone ignored. Explanations and elucidations written by scholars from the time the Gemara was compiled, have seen reprints, and some have even been compiled into new volumes, or adapted within the classic Gemara page, familiar to every Jewish religious student from a young age. But the academic innovations and scholarly discourses of the Chabad Rebbe's have not made their way into any of the editions publisher hitherto.
This is about to change. A new Gemara is in the works, and will include all of the interpretations and explanations of the Lubavitcher Rebbes.
After receiving the enthusiastic backing of many Chabad rabbis and Rosh Yeshivas in Israel, a team of elite young men is working to produce the revolutionary edition.
Their first project, Mesechta Kiddushin is nearing completion, and should be available for purchase right after the summer. This is the tractate to be learned in Chabad yeshivas this coming year.
The 300-large-page book is loaded with countless annotations and insights which have been gathered from over 100 volumes. Works from the Alter Rebbe, through the Chabad line of 7 Rebbe, until our Rebbe.
The Oholei Shem - Lubavitch, headed by Holon Shliach and Chief Rabbi Yochanan Gurary, is responsible for the compilation.
"Initially our goal is to complete the seven Masechtos learned in the Chabad yeshiva system," Rabbi Gurary said. "After that, we will consider continuing the project with other Masechtos."
The Kfar Chabad-based Chish company will be the sole distributor in Israel. It is yet to be determine who will bring them to America.
